8 Days Lemosho Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Climb

 

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic views, rich biodiversity, and excellent acclimatization. It begins on the western side of the mountain and merges with the Machame Route.

Tour Plan

1 Lemosho Gate (2,100 m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 m)
  • Distance: 7 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

 Transfer to Lemosho Gate for registration. Begin trek through lush rainforest, with chances to spot monkeys and birds.
Overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp

2 Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m)
  • Distance: 8 km

  • Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland

 Gradual ascent out of the forest into moorland. Cross several ridges and enjoy wide views of the Shira Plateau.
Overnight at Shira 1 Camp

3 Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m)
  • Distance: 7 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland

 Short hike across the Shira Plateau with amazing views of Kibo Peak. Optional hike to Cathedral Point for extra acclimatization.
Overnight at Shira 2 Camp

4 Shira 2 – Lava Tower (4,630 m) – Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
  • Distance: 10 km

  • Time: 6–8 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine desert → Moorland

 Acclimatization day. Ascend to Lava Tower then descend to Barranco Camp. This hike helps your body adjust to higher altitude.

5 Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035 m)
  • Distance: 5 km

  • Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine desert

 Climb the Barranco Wall (fun but not technical), then continue through valleys to Karanga.

6 Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640 m)
  • Distance: 4 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine desert

 Short climb to base camp. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for summit night. Early dinner and sleep.
Overnight at Barafu Camp

7 Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp (3,100 m)
  • Distance: ~17 km total

  • Time: 12–15 hours

  • Habitat: Arctic to rainforest

 Start summit attempt at midnight. Pass Stella Point (5,739 m) at sunrise, reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Take photos, then descend to Mweka Camp via Barafu.

8 Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640 m)
  • Distance: 10 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

 Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi/Arusha.
